Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such medications must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
